Marco Caviglia Member
He served as an Assistant District Attorney, then Chief Assistant Public Defender, both in Dutchess County, New York.
He is rated a “10” out of 10 in both criminal law and matrimonial law by Avvo, a national attorney rating based upon knowledge, experience, peer recognition, and ethics.
Mr. Caviglia is one of the few attorneys in New York State that is 35-b Board Certified to try capital cases and has been successful lead counsel in four death penalty cases. He has tried criminal cases his entire career, and matrimonial and personal injury cases for the past 31 years, attaining enviable results throughout.
In addition to having served as a County Legislator in Dutchess County, he served as Deputy Town Attorney for the Town of Poughkeepsie and Special Counsel to the Town of Wappinger, as a municpal prosecutor. He legally tried his first case as a prosecutor before he was even admitted to practice law in 1980 and hasn’t stopped since.
As a former judicial candidate in 2011, he was found “Highly Qualified” for Family Court judgeship by the Governor’s Bipartisan Screening Committee and found “Qualified” (then the highest rating) by the Independent Judicial Election Qualification Commission (IJEQC). He was personally endorsed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. In 2010, he was found “Highly Qualified” by the Dutchess County Bar Association in 2010 for a County Court judgeship (which deals with Criminal Law), as well as “Qualified” (then the highest rating) by the IJEQC.
His legal skills and knowledge have been recognized in a number of ways. He serves as an Arbitrator for the Second Department Appellate Division. He has lectured on both Criminal and Personal Injury law for accredited Continuing Legal Education for attorneys for the New York State Bar Association and the Dutchess County Bar Association. Marco Caviglia is a Diplomate of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy for teaching trial advocacy skills to attorneys.
He is admitted to the New York State Bar and Federal Courts of the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. Mr. Caviglia has been a member of the New York State Bar Association, the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, New York State Defender’s Association, the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York, the Mid-Hudson Women’s Bar Association and the the Dutchess County Bar Association.
Over the course of 20 years, Mr. Caviglia taught as an Adjunct Professor at SUNY New Paltz in the subjects of Criminology and Deviant Behavior, Adjunct Professor in both Paralegal Studies and Juvenile Delinquency at the Department of Criminal Justice at Marist College, and Criminal Procedure for the Department of Criminal Justice at Dutchess County Community College. He has authored several articles on legal subjects. Mr. Caviglia was also both the host of “Legal Brief,” a radio law program, and a columnist for a similarly titled weekly newspaper column.
A community leader, Mr. Caviglia is a former Commissioner of the Board of Elections in Dutchess County and the former Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the Dutchess County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He also served as an elected Town of LaGrange Fire District Commissioner.
